… So that Your Interactions with People Are More Pleasant, Flow More Easily, and You Save a Lot of Time and Energy!
What is the number one communication skill that is often overlooked or not developed enough?
It’s listening! While hearing is the physical (and passive) ability to perceive sound, listening is the (active) skill to give one’s attention.
Hearing tells you that music is playing, and listening tells you what the song is
all about.
Unfortunately, so many people do not really listen effectively! They tend to just wait for their turn to reply, or just interrupt the other person…. which of course,
is not listening!
That is very ineffective and counterproductive, especially when people don’t need a very smart opinion but a listening heart, which is very common!
So why is it so important to develop and master our listening skills?
When we actively listen, we leave no place for assumptions or for misunderstandings and instead, we allow clarity and understanding.
We can connect on a much deeper level, because when we show someone that we value them, that we are genuinely interested to hear them out and that we really care about their feelings and points of view, they tend to open up more easily.
We can resolve (or prevent) issues or conflicts more easily and effortlessly.
We can build mutual trust, appreciation and respect much faster, which leads to growth, expansion, and cooperation.
We are more accurate at evaluating the situation, hence we end up being more productive and efficient, and we save a lot of time and energy.
These are just some of the benefits of active listening, and I cannot emphasize enough the importance of developing our listening skills.
